Mercantile Foundation Report June 2025

The Mercantile Foundation continues to grow in both impact and importance. Thanks to a strong year of investment returns and generous donations, the Foundation’s capital reached $3.3 million as of 30 June 2025. This marks a significant milestone in our journey and reflects the unwavering support of our donor community.

In the coming weeks, all Foundation donors will receive a Donor Impact Statement, outlining the details of this year’s performance and grants. Under the Foundation’s charter, annual grants equivalent to 4% of capital are distributed to support the Club’s strategic needs. Accordingly, we anticipate $132,000 in grants during the 2025–26 financial year to be allocated toward boathouse improvements, equipment purchases, and direct athlete support.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the many donors who make this possible—led by Sean Colgan, whose exceptional generosity continues to inspire and empower the next generation of Mercantile athletes. We also acknowledge those who came before, from James Sprigg to today’s supporters, whose vision helped build a meaningful capital base for the long-term benefit of the Club.

However, our work is far from done. To fully realise the Foundation’s objectives—encompassing boathouse renewal, elite equipment, athlete assistance, and coaching support—we must continue to grow towards our long-term goal of a $10 million endowment. With continued support and stewardship, we believe this is achievable.

Patronage

On the patronage front, our community spirit was on full display during the Henley Royal Regatta, where Sean Colgan once again played an extraordinary role. Sean generously hosted a Mercantile gathering at the Leander Club for all competing members, families, and supporters. The turnout was remarkable, with over 80 attendees, creating a truly memorable evening that celebrated our athletes and the broader Mercantile community. Events like these remind us of the strength of our network and the shared pride in our Club’s legacy.

To all who continue to give so generously of their time, support, and resources—thank you. Your commitment fuels our future.

In Memory of Ian “Octa” Wilson (1933–2025)

Mercantile Rowing Club mourns the passing of Ian “Octa” Wilson, a cherished member whose connection to the Club spanned more than seven decades.

Octa began rowing at Geelong Grammar in 1951 before joining Mercantile in 1953, launching a lifelong commitment to the Club. As a rower, he was part of a golden era—winning multiple junior and senior titles, including championship eights and fours, and Henley pots alongside greats such as David Boykett. His athleticism later shone in sculling, and he claimed the State ¼ Mile Sprint title four consecutive times.

Though business eventually curtailed his competitive rowing, Ian remained a devoted Mercantilian—active in the Cock Robins veterans group, present at club functions, and instrumental in key moments, including the boathouse rebuilds of 1969 and 1973. His professional acumen and network brought valuable sponsorships and support, notably from Carlton & United Breweries, Esso, and the Carbine Club.

Beyond rowing, Ian became a legendary figure at the Richmond Football Club, serving as President during a period of success and earning the moniker “Richmond Royalty.” Yet despite his achievements in football, he often said nothing compared to the camaraderie and joy he found at Mercantile.

We extend our deepest condolences to Ian’s family. His legacy lives on in the foundations and friendships that helped shape Mercantile’s enduring spirit.
