High-Performance Report May 2025

As the 2025 international rowing season gathers pace, Mercantile Rowing Club is proud to celebrate the achievements and ambitions of our athletes competing around the globe.

Three of our rising stars — Anna Morrison, Zara Bongiorno, and Summer Kellett — are currently in Princeton, USA, trialling for selection in the Australian Under 23 team. Their commitment and determination speak volumes about the strength of our development culture, and we eagerly await the results of their campaign.

Mercantile was also honoured to receive an invitation to compete at the prestigious Rose Regatta in Shanghai, an all-women’s international event. Representing the club were Ann Pinnecke, Clodagh McCarthy, Jess Evatt Davey, and Zoe Korr. The crew delivered a strong performance, securing second place in the Double Scull. Stepping in as coach for the tour was Jordan Roberts, better known around the club as an accomplished athlete.

Preparations are nearing completion for our Henley Royal Regatta crews, with the final training blocks underway ahead of their mid-June departure. Dom Frederico has also earned a unique opportunity, joining the Leander Club for the Henley campaign. He kicked off his UK season with an impressive win in the Quad at the MET Regatta.

Meanwhile, Billy Osborne — currently based at the University of Washington — is working towards qualification for the prestigious Diamond Sculls at Henley, one of the sport’s most iconic individual events.

Back in Europe, several of our senior athletes are representing Australia at World Cup I in Varese, Italy. Their selection highlights the club’s deep connection to high-performance pathways and national team success.

Closer to home, Saturday 8s at Mercantile have become a vibrant weekly fixture, blending senior athletes, club legends, and emerging talent. Recent sessions have seen an influx of school leaver recruits rowing alongside some of the best in the sport. The opportunity to share a boat with Olympians like Drew Ginn and Angus Widdicombe has been a standout for many, providing both inspiration and invaluable experience. The energy on Saturday mornings reflects the club’s bright future, with strong depth building across all squads.

With a growing international footprint and a thriving home base, Mercantile remains steadfast in its mission to support athletes striving for excellence — both on and off the water.
