Captain’s Report August 2025

As we move into the final stretches of winter, August has been a pivotal month for Mercantile Rowing Club. The atmosphere around the boathouse is one of renewed focus and purpose, as the groundwork is laid for what promises to be an exciting head racing season.

I am pleased to report that we are seeing strong and consistent numbers across all squads. Our High-Performance, Junior Performance, and Masters athletes are all diligently building their aerobic base and refining their technique. This period of long, consistent training is the backbone of our season, and the commitment on display from every member has been nothing short of exceptional. The enthusiasm is infectious, and it’s a clear sign of the high aspirations we hold for the coming months.

The daily life of the club has been a hive of activity. On the water, crews are gelling, finding their rhythm, and pushing their limits. Off the water, the camaraderie is a constant reminder of the strong community that makes Mercantile more than just a place to train. We are fortunate to have such a dedicated group of athletes, coaches, and volunteers who contribute to this culture every day.

A First Win of the Season

We are thrilled to celebrate the first win of the season for our Junior Development Program! This past Saturday at the Saltwater Challenge Regatta, our Women’s B Grade Quad Scull took home the gold in a fantastic display of skill and teamwork. This victory is a significant milestone for our junior pathway athletes.

A huge congratulations to Lead Junior Pathway Coach & Coordinator Susie Franklin for her incredible work, and a massive well done to the winning crew: Imogen Amoore, Giselle Josza, Mietta Wilson, Violet Whithouse, and Amelia Giudice. This is an inspiring start to their racing careers and a testament to their dedication.

Looking Ahead

This month, we also held a significant Special General Meeting to discuss the establishment of the Mercantile Rowing Club Foundation, a crucial step toward securing the club’s long-term financial sustainability. The Guerin Club also hosted its annual Season Launch, a fantastic evening that officially kicked off the 2025/26 season and brought members together to look ahead to a full racing calendar.

As the days lengthen and the weather begins to warm, our attention will turn to the first head races of the season. Our crews are well on track, and the hard work put in during August will undoubtedly set us up for success. We are all excited to put our training to the test and see the results of our collective effort on the water.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to a successful August. Your dedication is the driving force behind the club’s success.
