President’s Report July 2025

At Mercantile, we are proud to be nurturing a healthy and connected rowing culture—one that is fostered by the leadership of our older athletes, our dedicated coaches, our Captain Alex Clarke, Vice-Captain Jordan King, and the energy and commitment of our younger members.

This culture is not built overnight; it stands on the strong foundations laid by those who came before us. The walls of our clubhouse are lined with the faces and names of men and women whose journeys were defined by hard work, teamwork, and sacrifice. Their achievements remind us of what is possible—and what it takes.

For every success we see and celebrate, there are countless moments of failure, challenge, and learning. Behind each plaque or photograph is a story of early mornings, grueling sessions, and the relentless pursuit of improvement.

I recently read a reflection from an Olympic rower who described how, after achieving her goal, what she missed most was not the medal—but the journey. The connection, the struggle, the shared ambition with teammates. It wasn’t just about the finish line; it was about the process.

One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned—thanks to Noel Donaldson—is to trust the process. In my eyes, it becomes:

Process vs Outcome.

The process matters. The good bits and the tough bits. Each step, each challenge, each breakthrough teaches us something. And they are all equally important.

At Mercantile, our purpose is to provide the platform for athletes to chase their goals. We offer coaching, structured training, technical feedback, and a team environment. But ultimately, we work in partnership with our athletes—who bring their whole selves to the process. Together, we work towards the outcome.

Let’s keep showing up for the process. The rest will take care of itself.
