The Mercs Masters continue to brave the depths of winter with consistent sessions in the gym, on the erg, and out on the water. Rain, fog, or frost—nothing stops this crew from keeping the blades moving.
This month, we take a moment to celebrate one of our honorary Masters, Jim Lowe.
Jim was part of the Australian rowing team at the controversial 1980 Moscow Olympics. In the wake of Russia’s invasion of Afghanistan, the United States led a boycott of the Games, creating intense political and social pressure around the world. While the Australian Olympic Committee ultimately voted to compete, athletes faced an incredibly difficult personal and public dilemma.
Ron McKeon—swimmer and father of Australia’s most decorated Olympian, Emma McKeon—was just 19 at the time. Reflecting on the turmoil, he said: “A lot of us were kids, and trying to fathom and navigate our way through that was certainly difficult. People started to take sides politically. There were protests… it was confusing. But I think back and it was like, well, it would be un-Australian not to fight to go.”
Jim’s story is a reminder of the courage and resilience athletes often show behind the scenes. Belated congratulations, Jim—this recognition is richly deserved.
